Tailoring Trends on SS23's Red Carpets

With 2023's awards season well underway, we've been taking note of the biggest menswear trends so far spotted at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and BRITs – the styles favoured by this season's fashion tastemakers are the perfect place to get inspired for your 2023 wardrobe. Red carpets so far this year continue to show that the suit is far from dead, in fact it's thriving! Traditional tailoring is the style consensus, with both reliable classics and fresh new takes in cuts, fabrications, and colourways. Read on for the top trends, and how to make them wearable, whether you're heading to a glittering awards show, or just your 9-to-5.

Double Breasted Suits

Traditional silhouettes have been spotted up and down 2023's red carpets so far, in the form of the double-breasted blazer. Far from the stuffy construction that saw the double-breasted suit fall out of favour for decades, the retro favourite is back with modern touches like oversized peak satin lapels seen on the likes of Austin Butler and Harry Styles, giving the construction a fresh edge. Reimagined in contemporary colourways including blue, brown, and cream, chosen by Eddie Redmayne and Martin Freeman respectively for their BAFTAs appearances, SS23's double breasted suit looks far from dated, instead it's the tailoring trend du jour; equal parts luxurious and modern.

Retro Pastels

Fashion tends to celebrate pastels every spring, but usually to a lesser extent in tailoring. This season, though, soft-hued palettes of pink, powdery blues, and even lilacs have graced the red carpet. Marking a retro prom aesthetic that's been turning heads, à la Seth Rogen's salmon pink tuxedo at the Golden Globes, Barry Keoghan's pastel blue ensemble at the same event and Stormzy's coordinated lavender tailoring on the BRITs red carpet. Give your own nod to this trend in dusty pink suiting, a head-to-toe cream ensemble, or a showstopping powder blue blazer, waistcoat and trousers – go all-out with a matching blue shirt if you dare. Into it but don't want to max out on the 80s aesthetic? Incorporate subtle accents with a super-wearable pink shirt paired with your favourite charcoal suit, candy-coloured accessories, or a pleated dress shirt that hints at the prom aesthetic, but dials things down.

Blue & Navy Suits

The contemporary colour palette of blue and navy is sticking around in 2023 if the red carpets are anything to go by. Excitingly, this season sees the versatile colourway sprawl across entire ensembles, from suits to shirts to shoes, in suave monochromatic style. Navy was favoured by the likes of Peter Gould and Domhnall Gleeson at the Golden Globes, the former experimenting with the hue in velvet, the latter in smart ultra dark navy, and Ke Huy Quan's BAFTA look incorporated shades of blue in a variety of luxe textures, too. There are endless ways to incorporate this trend into your formal wardrobe, from sharp slim fit styles ideal for the office, to heritage-inspired blue tweeds for wedding season, and subtle blue checks that make the perfect all-rounder. Blue and navy suits are a trend that show no signs of slowing down.

Florals

While a new take on pastels and florals graces red carpets each year, SS23 has taken the seasonal stalwarts to the extreme with oversized boutonnieres affixed to the tuxedos of Eddie Redmayne and Chris Perfetti at the Golden Globes, and Harry Styles' BRITs look. Day-to-day, incorporate this spring favourite into your formalwear by choosing printed floral shirts over your usual plain formal shirts. Subtle floral jacquards are a super-wearable nod to the trend too, but note that the bolder the print, the closer you'll be to nailing this trend! The easiest way to hop on this style? Perennially-stylish floral accessories – have a roster of floral ties to turn to for all of life's occasions, and you're good to go.
